Methods of sedentary lifestyle study: possibilities and limitations

There has been an increasing focus on physical activity in both adults and children in recent years. Such indicator as sedentary behavior is underestimated, while the consequences of lack of physical activity are well understood. According to several studies, sedentary lifestyle is associated with such adverse health consequences as all-cause mortality, the development of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus. Nevertheless, studies showing of which duration this period should be in order not to affect human health are insufficient to this date due to the difficulties of conducting them. The article presents a non-systematic literature review, aimed at the study of methods (objective and subjective), available to researchers to identify sedentary behavior in ordinary living conditions, with an assessment of their practicality and objectivity. It has been shown that each method of assessment, whether subjective or objective, has its benefits and drawbacks. Therefore, the combination of these methods of sedentary lifestyle assessment is the most preferable for today to ensure a significant and reliable result.
