An estimated 1.2 million people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) become pregnant each year, and approximately 300,000 initiate antiretroviral therapy (ART) during pregnancy [ 1 ]. Moreover, > 120,000 preventable new HIV transmissions occurred among children in 2022, mostly due to lack of ART during pregnancy or breastfeeding [ 1 ]. Clinical data demonstrate that perinatal transmission risk can be reduced to ≤ 1% when effective ART, combined with other prevention strategies, is used during and after pregnancy [ 2 ].
