F-46 | Risk Factors for Mortality in the Setting of Inferior Vena Cava Filter Breakdown: Data from National Inpatient Sample

Inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) are exceedingly used to prevent pulmonary embolism in patients undergoing surgery or in patients with some contraindication to anticoagulation. Society of Interventional Radiology recommend a structured follow-up program to increase retrieval rates. Despite this, IVCF retrieval rates ranges between 15 – 50%. We aim to identify the risk factors in patients who died in the setting of an IVCF breakdown. We used the US National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from the years 2016 to 2019 as our sample population. We used ICD-10 classification to identify patients with diagnosis of mechanical breakdown of umbrella device. We used STATA version 13.0 (College Station, TX) for statistical analyses. The final study population was based on 1,460 inpatient hospital discharge records. Older patients with history of coronary artery disease, stroke and dementia were associated more frequently in patients who died due to filter breakdown. The patients who died also had a non-significantly longer length of stay and more cost of inpatient stay. IVCF have a fracture rate of 1-2%. Identification of high-risk patients and cosideration for removal in this high-risk population may help prevent mortality.
