Increased cognition in younger patients through better quality of life after Cochlear Implantation

Introduction The present study investigates the correlation between cognition (working memory (WM) and processing speed (PS)) and quality of life after cochlear implantation (CI) in younger patients. Material and methods 32 patients were included in the prospective study and examined preoperatively and 12 months after CI. Adult patients of working age up to 65 years with CI indication were included. Cognition was measured using 4 selected tests from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS IV). Quality of life was assessed using the Nijmegen Cochlear Implant Questionnaire (NCIQ), divided into 6 subdomains and a total score. Data analysis was performed using SPSS (rank correlation analysis according to Spearman). Results The patient cohort comprised 56.3% (n=18) men and 43.8% (n=14) women with a mean age of 52.0±9.6 years. Postoperatively, there were significant improvements in WM (p≤0.001) and PS (p=0.011). The preoperative correlation of the WM and PS showed 1 significant correlation between the PS and the NCIQ 3 (p=0.01) . Postoperatively, there were significant correlations between the PS and the NCIQ subdomains 1 (p=0.043); 2 (p=0.001); 3 (p<0.000); 5 (p=0.048) and total (p=0.006). There are significant correlations between the WM and the NCIQ subdomains 2 (p=0.025) and 3 (p=0.005). Discussion The results indicate that the improved quality of life after CI surgery in young patients correlates with improved processing speed and working memory.
