Education and military–societal convergence

While institutions can help legitimate civil authorities maintain control over a military that has the ability to destroy the state, that control is only as strong as the breadth of acceptance of healthy democratic norms within the military. Such acceptance decreases when the military-society gap becomes so large that the military views itself as separate from, and superior to, the democracy it swears to protect and arrogates a role for itself in selecting the government. In this chapter, the authors argue that the university—with its emphasis on academic freedom, respect for diverse views competing in the marketplace of ideas, and equality—provides a unique opportunity for bridging the gap and nourishing healthy civil-military relations.
