Introduction to the Handbook on Aging and Place

In this introductory chapter, we briefly trace the history and evolution of the concept of place in philosophy as well as the development of scholarship on aging and place within gerontology, specifically environmental gerontology and geographical gerontology. While we emphasize the essentialness of place as a concept for gerontology, important to this volume is the central distinction between aging in place and aging and place, which we introduce here. We then suggest numerous key dimensions of place for aging studies and indicate where those are taken up in this volume. Those include scale, spatial, temporal, social, cultural, political and economic, and natural dimensions. We elaborate on the logic and organization of the book, including the selection of contributors to the volume and the challenges we set for them. We end the introduction with an invitation to join the important enterprise of understanding and improving aging and place relationships.
