Cell Membrane Surface-Engineered Nanoparticles for Targeted Bone Cancer Therapy

The unique structure of bone has limited most therapeutics’ delivery to the target site at a definite and effective concentration. Although a wide variety of nanoparticles have been developed to induce desirable therapeutic outcomes along with improving the drug’s bioavailability, the efficacy of treatment is not high enough due to the low accumulation of nanoparticles in the site of action and elimination by the immune system. With the aid of biomimetic approaches, cell membrane-derived nanovesicles have recently been assessed for bone cancer therapy. These carriers are endowed with intrinsic biocompatibility, easy penetration through biological barriers, high blood circulation time, and targetability towards desired tissue/organ. The present chapter has targeted bone cancer therapy through cell membrane-derived nanovesicles camouflaging various nanoparticles. In this regard, the most common bone cancer types, along with bone metastasis from other types of cancer, have been shed light on. In the end, challenges and future perspectives of this category of nanocarriers are addressed.
