For the first time on Earth a life form (humans) has developed vastly improved potential to recognise, perhaps mitigate or avoid challenges, reduce vulnerability, improve adaptability and add to opportunities. Unfortunately, that potential is largely unrealised. Indeed, it is an irony that modern humans are arguably more vulnerable to challenges than people in the past; humans must become aware of this, use opportunities and take appropriate action against challenges. Many of the pressing challenges faced are caused by humans or have been exacerbated by them – unwelcome additions to natural threats. To explore these issues this chapter looks at: identifying key challenges and opportunities; human population increase; global warming; pollution and wastes; diseases.
