Mitigation, vulnerability, resilience and adaptation

Environmental management (EM) must explore responses to challenges and opportunities, focusing on mitigation, reduction of vulnerability and, above all, improvement of adaptation and resilience. Originally explored by ecology and hazards assessment, vulnerability, resilience and adaptation are now of interest to many disciplines, governments and business. This chapter examines: mitigation; vulnerability; adaptation and resilience. In the last 20 years realisation of modern weaknesses has started to prompt change and some argue for a resilience thinking paradigm. Adaptation and resilience are vital: mitigate we might, adapt we must. Trends, outcomes and early-warning thresholds (tipping points) are not adequately established so EM must be flexible. In a world characterised by (perhaps sudden or rapid) change in ecological, social and economic systems, it is important to ‘expect the unexpected’ and manage to enhance resilience.
