Chapter 3 introduces an alternative approach to the study of political processes (and populism). Indeed, we may find ourselves better positioned to encircle the latter, to understand what is specific about it and contextualize it properly, to be able to differentially identify it, to juxtapose it rigorously from other related phenomena with which it is often confused, and, last but not least, to assess its operation within democratic representation in a more rigorous way by following the ground-breaking work of Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe and others (the so-called Essex School). In this chapter, the main pillars of a discursive approach to political processes are highlighted and explained in a straightforward and accessible way, allowing the productive employment of this rich conceptual apparatus in rigorous populism research.
