Routinely, the names, pains, and history of the Roma and Sinti victims of the Holocaust have lingered on the periphery of trials, laws, commemorations, archives, epistemology, and sites of memory. Today, canonical voices, alongside some states and interstate alliances, continue to refuse to recognize the Roma and Sinti as victims of the Holocaust. Many rank Roma and Sinti as victims of a secondary Nazi genocide, maintaining that the Romani people were unsystematically targeted because of their “behaviors” or were killed in smaller numbers. Yet, the Nazis racialized Romani people as an “asocial” and “criminal” race and systematically hunted, deported, and exterminated them; more than 90 percent of the Czech Roma and Sinti people, for example, perished.1 Whereas one response to this historiographic problem is simply to write histories of Romani experiences of Nazi genocide, Joskowicz’s book artfully co-centers Romani history with Jewish history during the Holocaust, addressing many of the complexities, ambiguities, subtleties, and silences that occurred in the shared, proximal, and entangled human catastrophes that the Nazis enacted.
