Effect of Educational program on Nurses’ Performance Regarding Prevention of Infection among Children Receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition

Background: Total parenteral nutrition is vital for children who unable to consume theirfood through gastrointestinal system, there are a lot of complications; the most common andserious is blood infection. The study was aimed to evaluate the effect of educationalprogram on nurses’ performance about prevention of infection among children receiving totalparenteral nutrition. Subjects and method: Subjects: A convenience sampling of thirty fivenurses from Tanta University Hospital and fifteen nurses from Al-Mabra Hospital. Fiftychildren at Intensive Care Units that were received total parenteral nutrition. Setting: Thestudy conducted at Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Tanta Main University Hospital and AlMabra Tanta Hospital. Four tools were used to collect data: Tool I; structured interviewschedule to collect sociodemographic data of nurses and assess nurses, knowledge, Tool II;assess nurses performance using observational check lists, Tool III; laboratory investigationrelated to infection of children receiving total parenteral nutrition: (ESR, CRP, WBCS, Bloodculture), Tool IV; physiological and physical measurement of children Results: revealedthat educational program have positive effect on both knowledge and practice of nursesregarding prevention of infection and significance improvement in condition of childrenreceiving total parenteral nutrition. Conclusion: Educational program have positive effect onperformance of nurses, physiological and physical condition of children and prevention ofinfection occur with total parenteral nutrition. Recommendation: implementation ofeducational and training programs should be encouraged and repeated for pediatric intensivecare unit children who received total parenteral nutrition to prevent infection.
