Identification of critical combat tasks among Brazilian Air Force personnel

BACKGROUND: The modern warfare requires the soldiers to have a lot of skills when performing combat tasks (CTs) in real scenarios. And in addition to take part in specific physical training programs, it is essential to have reliable evaluations to highlight the amount of preparedness of the troops. This study aimed to identify critical CTs to the Brazilian Air Force (BAF) career officers and to establish scenarios where these tasks could be performed, which represented the first phase of a wider research design attempting to develop combat readiness assessments for their personnel, referred to as simulated tasks (STs).METHODS: After a screening of the literature, subject matter experts (SMEs) from two different groups were used to help the researchers to establish a list of the CTs considered critical to the BAF. The SMEs took part in interviews, answered questionaries, and analyzed a lot of material sent for them.RESULTS: Initially three deployment hypothesis (DHs) and 45 CTs were screened, and after the exclusion of duplicates, the list remained with 32 tasks. The SME interviews were useful to exclude 12 tasks and include two, totaling 22 CTs. The SMEs analyzed the importance of the tasks and none of them were disqualified. Finally, the complementary tasks were gathered, and the final list presented 12 CTs.CONCLUSIONS: This study identified three DHs and 12 CTs considered critical to the BAF personnel, providing the basis for the development of STs.
