Clinical Decision Support in Laboratory Medicine

Clinical decision support (CDS) is a promising tool for improving laboratory test utilization. By integrating CDS into the pre- and post-analytical phases of pathology testing, the laboratory can play a crucial role in reducing diagnostic errors and improving patient care. Nevertheless, careful development and implementation are required for a successful CDS system. Poorly designed or implemented CDS processes can potentially harm patients, as clinicians may fail to identify patients who require early intervention. Clinicians should understand how the CDS functions within the decision-making process and how clinical and organizational factors can influence the interpretation of the CDS output. In this Q&A, we invited 6 experts with diverse backgrounds in industry, bioethics, academia, tertiary hospital, and commercial laboratories to provide their perspectives on CDS for laboratory testing.
