Tobacco use is a global matter and concern and responsible for one in five deaths in the US due to the well-known adverse effects on the body including respiratory and cardiovascular illness and cancer. The pharmacokinetics of nicotine, the main psychoactive and highly addictive component of tobacco is discussed, as is the pharmacology of nicotine, a highly addicting drug. The pharmacology of nicotine is largely through nicotine sensitive acetylcholine receptors located in different parts of the brain. Although nicotine has some positive effects such as on memory, it produces tolerance and dependence as well as medical complications. The signs and symptoms of nicotine withdrawal and forensic considerations are discussed in Chapter 15 .
