Hallucinogens: Altering Reality or Helping?

In Chapter 14 the history and definition of hallucinogens is reviewed along with it colorful and controversial history as a recreational drug and in the resurgence of psychogenics in therapeutic treatment of mental illness, including depression. The two broad categories of hallucinogens as well as the common hallucinogens within each class are discussed including LSD, PCP, mescaline, peyote, MDMA and others. The absorption, distribution and pharmacokinetics of hallucinogens are discussed, as is the pharmacological basis for their biobehavioral effects. Many hallucinogens exert their effect through changes in brain serotonin but some affect other biogenic amines as well. The psychological and medical effects of hallucinogens is discussed including signs and symptoms of intoxication, tolerance dependence and the renewed interest in plant-based psychedelics in treating PTSD is discussed as well as forensic considerations in the biobehavioral effects of these drugs and their analytical detection in the lab.
