The Brain–Behavior Relationship

This chapter discusses the mind-body dichotomy and the important historical antecedents to our developing knowledge about neuroscience. The mind-body dichotomy and the development of the notion of a physical “mind”. The discovery of cells and the seminal work of Galvani that demonstrated that the nervous system is bioelectric, the study of the emotional brain and the organization of behavior, including the reinforcing effects of brain stimulation is discussed. The chapter closes by relating these discoveries to drug use, emotional affect, motor skills and other aspects of behavior as a segway to the chapters that follow.
