What Is a Drug?

In this chapter, the reader is introduced to the definitions of drugs, terminology used throughout the book, the development and use of therapeutic drugs as a very recent in the many previous thousands of years of humans ingesting intoxicants. Psychotherapeutic drugs are described both as their trade name, generic chemical name and molecular formula. As a prelude to many chapters that follow, clinical definitions and medical classifications are discussed in the context of DSM -5 so that the reader understands the difference between drug use, addiction and drug or substance use disorders. Finally, Chapter 1 introduces the Golden Age of Pharmacology, the significance of the relationship between the brain and behavior and a model of how a simple behavior (the BBB Model) relates to the effects of drugs.
