Epidemiology, Pathology, Diagnosis, Prevention, and Management of Unknown Primary Cancer

Cancer of Unknown Primary is a group of metastatic cancers for which the primary origins of the cancer cannot be found by the usual diagnostic pathway. It carries a poor prognosis with very few efficacious treatments. The diagnostic focus should be elucidating the potential primary tumor or those that align to a ‘favorable’ subtype, through meticulous pathological work-up, so that site-specific treatments can be given. In the absence of a primary origin, patients with adequate performance status can be offered combination chemotherapy.
