“We Should All Be Feminists”

African Feminism, which generally refers to feminist theorizing and praxis that emerge from Africa, continues to be contested and has been re-dynamized over time. Discussions have become much more sophisticated and multifaceted taking into consideration the pluralistic condition of post-colonial Africa. A younger generation of African feminist scholars and thinkers has also emerged whose debates tend to transcend the romantic and absolutist character of the older generation of African feminist scholars and thinkers. This new generation makes critical interventions that refocus the African feminist movement so that it is responsive to contemporary issues and priorities of their particular generation. One such African feminist is Nigerian writer, activist and philosopher, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This study thus conceptualizes the African feminist opportunities offered by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie through an expansive critical analysis of her selected written work and speeches. The study uses Adichie’s work to draw attention to the interplay of African feminism and gender activism and to assess the extent to which Adichie’s feminist interventions have contributed to a meaningful understanding of gender issues in Africa. Adichie’s work has come onto the radar of African feminist activism and advocacy because of how it is generally hinged upon the need to challenge normative and universalist assumptions of gender-biased systems of thought and practice. However, because Adichie has always distanced herself from theoretical and academic feminism, there is not much scholarly work done to carefully consider the African feminist principles and values within Adichie’s work. Accordingly, this study aims to unpack the fundamentals of Adichie’s feminist imaginaries and to show how these have contributed to the broader subject of African feminism.
