19 Instruction as Self-Protection

Communication about risk and safety always includes instructional elements - information that serves to enhance citizens’ self-protection capabilities with regard to various types of danger. This chapter presents an overview of the use of instruction as self-protection from a communication-centric perspective. It details the IDEA model - which is based on instructional communication theory - and its applicability to instruction as self-protection. Furthermore, it systematically compares the IDEA model to other models commonly used in research on risk and crisis communication, including CERC, the PADM, and the EPPM. This comparison not only sheds light on the IDEA model’s contributions to the academic literature on communication about risk and safety but also highlights its possible weaknesses and potential improvements.
