When it comes to the UK, most analysts bite into the subject matter of the National Health Service and go in all deep; however, the very most of them never seriously touch upon the issue of mental health, which social policy experts, more often than not, think is outside their usual comfort zone. This chapter by Paul Taylor and Jason L. Powell provides the urgently needed remedy for this in the international social policy realm. The UK welfare state system and its historical-cum-institutional account are investigated with strong critical eyes, which is particularly refreshing when looking at usual reports on the UK welfare state. The historical legacies of Thatcherism and neoliberalism also left their all-changing marks on the mental health system in the UK, in addition to the overall welfare state system of course. Taylor and Powell point to the interconnectivity of social exclusion and the failures to provide adequate (decent) mental health care for all of the UK population.
