Mr Beech is a 57-year-old man approaching the end of a prison sentence for multiple offences of rape and indecent assault against his granddaughter from when she was eight through to 14 years of age, with additional convictions for indecent assault against one of her friends from when that child was ten through to 12 years of age. Assessing and managing the risk of sexually harmful behaviour, especially in people with convictions for sexual offences, is a fundamental responsibility of all professionals involved in public protection; reliable risk assessment and management practice is one of the most important developments in the field since the early 1900s. On accepting the probation officer&s;s referral, the practitioner should consider commencing their work with the generation of some preliminary hypotheses about the nature of the case, to be tested during the work to follow.
