This chapter exemplifies best practice in the discipline of diagnostic and needs assessment as well as risk assessment and management. Risk – and case – formulations are stories, albeit ones that are impressively scaffolded by a combination of evidence about the individual case and theory relevant to the problems experienced by the person(s) who is (are) its subject. Just as the authors do not speak in bullet-pointed lists, they should not feel inclined to tell their client&s;s stories in list form, however convenient it is for us to write this way. They are not the customer of their work. Writing in list form means the reader has to interpret what you mean, and you have not been employed to create work for the customer; your job is to assist and not burden them.
