Abstract In the United States, the direct and indirect costs of care for individuals suffering a traumatic brain injury (TBI) are estimated at more than $56 billion annually. The overall impact is even more substantial when one considers that the majority of severe head injuries occur in adolescents and young adults. Following head trauma, the spectrum of TBI ranges from concussion to diffuse axonal injury with irreversible coma. Within this spectrum lie the patients with traumatic intracranial hemorrhages (TIH).
