Perspectives on Adopting Patient Centric Sampling for Pediatric Trials

Conducting clinical studies in pediatric populations is challenging. Children are not “small adults,” and therefore, the processes and trial designs used in adult studies are not transferable. Additionally, enrolling pediatric patients in clinical trials is difficult, and many trials fail or are terminated due to poor or insufficient enrollment. Two of the well-documented reasons for poor enrollment are related to inconvenience and trial procedures. One of these trial procedures includes the collection of blood samples for pharmacokinetic (PK) analysis as well as blood samples collected for routine clinical tests. The article discusses these challenges and the potential for adoption of blood collection techniques that are patient-centric, designed to collect a small volume of blood without needing a phlebotomist, and therefore can even be performed at home.
