A larger sense of identity fights against a more circumscribed sense of ethnic identity that marks this group off ethnically and considers the state it controls to be more of an extension of its culture. Breakaway ethno-regionalist movements believe that they need to be able to express their national identity within their own political state. It also implies (or sometimes states explicitly) that the proper political place for a nation lies within a polity oriented around shared ethnicity and away from multinationalism. To these new nationalists, diversity seems like it has been a raw deal, where they have been stifled in their own goals. In this regard, ethnic-based movements provide a marked contrast with the sort of multinational and supranational entities. The situation of many Black Americans spurred some to consider a nationalist solution. African Americans long suffered involuntary servitude, Jim Crow-era persecution, a history of discrimination and the denial of full standing in US society.
