Multinational, Federalist, and Supranationalist States

For most of history, all substantial political entities were multicultural. Ancient and medieval empires cobbled together dozens, hundreds, of distinct cultural communities under a single ruler. Smaller states, not grand enough to be considered empires, contained fewer distinct cultures but were also quite diverse. The idea of a multinational state is commonly discussed among political scientists and political geographers and refers to a country which contains more than one self-identified nation. As such, multinationalism is a type of multiculturalism. Yet whereas multiculturalism encompasses a broad spectrum of cases at varying spatial scales, multinationalism is more limited to self-defined nations within a state. Federalism is often contrasted to a unitary government where the central government yields the most power. The chapter discusses supranationalism, a phenomenon whereby independent states decide to band together and create an entity larger than themselves.
