Nationalism at the Local Scale

Nationalism is primarily considered at a “national” scale: a larger unit that comprises considerable territory and both rural and urban terrain. However, it is also a vital aspect of the local scale. Cities assume an outsized meaning to the nation. This chapter addresses some of the most significant aspects of how this operates on the ground and in the national consciousness. But first, it is important to make a separation between the role of the local area as a generic sort of territory, and of certain local areas – such as the capital, largest city, symbolic hearths – as crucial to the national identity. Well-established ethnic groups have long been able to coordinate many elements of residential life within the ethnic community. National identity includes all of the peoples who identify with the nation (and sometimes a few who do not) and the territory that national elites and common folk feel belongs to them.
