Electrochemistry
Le résumé fourni par la source
This chapter describes an electrolyte, which is a substance that dissociates into its component ions upon dissolution and produces a solution that conducts electricity. It examines the variable conductivity of electrolytes, in which small ions tend to be more conductive than large ions. It also points out that the total number of ions in a solution determines overall conductivity. The chapter discusses the ion–ion interactions that influence the behaviour of the electrolyte and the position of species in the electrochemical series, which determines the reactivity of the solution. It cites electrochemical processes which involve an exchange of electrons, noting that oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is the gain of electrons.
