The VAD Coordinator's Role: Education and Team Communication

The left ventricular assist device (LVAD) coordinator participates in all phases of LVAD patient care from patient selection through outpatient management. This chapter discusses the role of the LVAD coordinator in patient and caregiver education and the importance of the LVAD coordinator as a member of the multidisciplinary team. If the implanting center offers multiple device types, the LVAD coordinator should explain each device and rationale for device selection for the patient. Patients and caregivers should be prepared for the postoperative phase prior to their operation. Center-specific data regarding average intensive care unit and hospital stay lengths should be reviewed to manage expectations regarding hospitalization and recovery. Long-term goals of LVAD therapy and care include improvement in quality of life—specifically a better functional capacity, fewer heart failure symptoms, reduced hospitalizations, and a decrease in mortality.
