Ethics in Health Promotion Practice

This chapter outlines some of the inherent tensions in health promotion practice. The chapter suggests that whilst health promotion is laudable in its attempts to support individual and community health, it can have unintended and unethical side-effects which can be counter-productive. The adage that prevention is better and cheaper than cure is, therefore, contested. Ethics in health promotion has not received full attention, but evidence shows that practitioners would benefit from a code of practice to guide their decision-making. Existing codes of practice are critiqued in the chapter and the merits and de-merits of establishing a contemporary code are debated.
