Towards an Ethical Future in Health Promotion

This chapter considers what an ethical future in health promotion might look like. This chapter picks up on the main themes presented in the previous six chapters and has two distinct halves. In the earlier part of the chapter, codes of ethics in health promotion are discussed drawing on some existing frameworks and guidelines for health promotion practice. The chapter reflects on how ethical values and principles underpin these and considers how they might be further developed for best practice. The latter half of this chapter covers issues of sustainability taking into account the sustainability of health promotion and sustainability in relation to planetary health, and what it means to work ethically in relation to these. The chapter discusses the collective responsibility that those working in health promotion have to work in ethically sustainable ways to promote health. The chapter contains two case studies, one about food insecurity in Australia and the other about Universal Basic Income.
