There are many diseases that affect the skeletal muscle of the horse. In some cases, the presentation is pathognomonic, whereas in others the clinical signs are vague and the differential diagnosis more obscure (i.e. skeletal muscle disease should always be considered in the differential of poor performance). Diseases of skeletal muscle can be broadly divided into those that present following exercise, which is the most common scenario, and those that are not associated with exertion, such as atypical myopathy. Muscle enzyme activity is the most useful tool for confirming underlying muscle damage, although skeletal muscle biopsy is required to determine the underlying aetiology. Other imaging modalities may also be useful in certain situations. In general, the prognosis for horses with skeletal muscle disease is good, when appropriate management recommendations are followed.
