Speaking of the Other

In the age of social media, speaking of the other in public has become radically accessible and impactful. An individual's responsibility for speaking of the other is not infrequently suppressed when one prioritizes one's right, freedom, and interest. This common practice assumes that the human agent is independent of the other. That is problematic. For, before consciousness generates the sense of self, one is already indebted to the other. Speaking, therefore, is not merely externalized thoughts of an independent agent but linguistic actions that come with moral accountability. This paper will invite Song 5:2–8 to show the turn from speaking out of interest (5:2–5) to speaking out of love (5:8). The former leads to the failure to unite, while the latter leads to restorative peace. Though one's initial and immediate inclination may arise out of an egocentric interest, love can realign one's linguistic action to that of responsiveness and responsibility to the other. In brief, speaking of the other in public is not a matter of a free agent choosing to be friendly or not, but of one who wakes up belatedly and catches up with the responsibility to the other.
