Abstract Austerity measures have been implemented far and wide across the globe in recent decades, commonly as a precondition to access financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF)—one of the world’s most powerful international organizations. This book seeks to provide a comprehensive account of the scope and diversity of IMF-mandated austerity measures over the past forty years, and to examine how austerity has impacted social policies and outcomes. This introductory chapter covers definitional issues on austerity, describes the roles of the IMF, explains what conditionality is and how it is applied in IMF loans, and outlines how the analysis will unfold throughout the volume.
