Health-related quality of life of youth with a disability in the physical, emotional, family, peer, and educational context
Le résumé fourni par la source
This chapter presents the complexity of the concept of health-related quality of life and its importance in the population of children and adolescents. Difficulties associated with measurement, especially in these groups, and the adopted conceptualisation are indicated. Special attention is drawn to particular dimensions of health-related quality of life: physical wellbeing, psychological wellbeing, autonomy and parents, peers and social support, and school environment. The research presented here concerns health-related quality of life of adolescents with an intellectual disability, a physical disability, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. The correlations between individual dimensions of health-related quality of life and the intergroup comparisons are presented taking into account the sociodemographic aspects of the surveyed adolescents (such as age, sex, and financial situation) and the type of disability. The results indicate an insignificant correlation between health-related quality of life and age, and a significant one between almost all dimension of health-related quality of life and financial situation. Gender differences were observed only in terms of autonomy and parents. There are also differences in health-related quality of life between adolescents in three of the subgroups analysed: autonomy and parents, physical wellbeing, and school environment. The results obtained are discussed from a sociological and psychological point of view.
