Jonathan: Let’s start with how our design process for Fusion differed from other Catalyst Theatre1 projects. Bretta: As a designer, I am predominantly in response mode - responding to a text or the seeds of an idea from a director or a playwright - and riffing on that. With Fusion, we chose to reverse the order. We dreamed up a set and lighting design and then hired eight writer/ director teams to create a performance in response. They were given a physical environment - a set (scaffolding towers, stairs, bridges), divided into ten distinct areas, with an interactive lighting effect for each area . We wanted to see what would happen if we reversed the offer/response mode that we traditionally find in theatre.
