Analytical Tools for Examining Counterfeit Drug Products

The large number of manuscripts and review articles in the current scientific literature that describe the use of analytical tools used for combatting counterfeit drug products highlights the emphasis that is being placed on securing the pharmaceutical supply chain and underscores the importance for doing so. This chapter briefly introduces some recent advances regarding anti-counterfeiting technology/preventative measures such as in-drug/on-drug labeling technologies, and thoroughly discusses a wide range of analytical counterfeit detection methods, including those that employ microscopy, molecular spectroscopy, atomic spectroscopy, and chromatography. This chapter will not only provide a comprehensive up-to-date review of the current state of the art regarding analytical techniques that are used to detect and source counterfeit drug products, including methods that have not yet been published, it will also provide guidance for examining drug products suspected to be counterfeit. Finally, this chapter will also describe which tools are routinely used for criminal casework by the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Forensic Chemistry Center (FCC), which has been examining counterfeit drug products for more than 25 years.
