Silencing of Stress-regulated miRNAs in Plants

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs (sRNAs) that have a significant function in controlling endogenous target gene expression. This chapter highlights the detailed knowledge of miRNA-mediated modulation on significant genes suppression and regulatory pathways under stress. sRNA-induced gene silencing has the potential to spread throughout an entire plant. The miRNAs are shown to regulate many stress-regulated genes during the stress condition. Salinity had the most destructive effect on plant growth and development relative to other abiotic stresses in the crop plants. miRNA recorded different roles in physiological and developmental processes. It is also involved in different metabolic processes, development, hormonal expression, shape formation stress responses and miRNA biogenesis self-regulation. A variety of miRNAs were reported under different stress conditions, triggered due to abiotic or biotic stress response in plants. sRNAs are mobile signalling and monitoring molecules among the plant and migrate between plants as well as in other species, including pathogens used to silence the biotic and abiotic stress genes.
