Characteristics of a strong and empowered animal behavior technician–client–patient relationship begins with a technician who has the ability to communicate knowledge, demonstrate technical skill, and is able to teach in multiple different styles dependent on the style the patient and the client need at any particular moment. Strong commonalities between the counseling aspects of animal behavior therapy and the field of marriage and family therapy have been found. Four major parallels were found between marriage and family counseling and the role of an animal behavior technician and this chapter details these four parallels. Communication skills have to be taught, learned, applied, and then adapted to fit one's personal style. The four-habits model is a tool that can be applied and used to perfect communication skills and focuses on relationship-centered care. The model has four main goals that are established when applied correctly.
