Importance of parenteral nutrition terminologyDear Editor, When using various terminology, nutrition support clinicians must be cautious.It has come to our attention that several recent articles published in Nutrition in Clinical Practice (NCP) used the misleading term "premixed" parenteral nutrition (PN) instead of the preferred and American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) Board-approved 1 term "multichamber bag parenteral nutrition" (MCB-PN) product.Numerous publications have used the term premixed PN, and further described these solutions incorrectly as "ready-to-use" products that avoid manipulation.The use of such terminology is concerning as it does not accurately represent the intended clinical application of these commercially available prescription products, leading to the possibility of unsafe administration.Consistent use of preferred terminology when referencing these products will minimize confusion among practitioners and, importantly, strengthen efforts to optimize PN safety and patient outcomes.Commercially available MCB-PN products are not ready-to-use.First, activation in a sterile environment to combine the macronutrients is necessary.Second, addition of micronutrients (eg, multivitamins and trace elements) clinically appropriate for the patient is necessary prior to administration.With appropriate consideration for the inclusion of critical micronutrients, these activated and modified MCB-PN products provide a complete nutrition support regimen in select patient populations.Ongoing shortages, limiting access to nutrition support products, has led many institutions to implement the use of commercially available MCB-PNs.Yet for many institutions, experience with MCB-PNs is limited.A need exists for continued MCB-PN education, so all healthcare practitioners are knowledgeable and empowered to safely use these products.Using appropriate terminology and appreciating product limitations is a critically important first step.Given the increased utilization of commercially available MCB-PNs due to shortages in intravenous sterile products, compounding supplies, and hospital
