Le résumé fourni par la source
Helical self-organizations are, most probably, the broadest class of complex systems encountered for billions of years in natural phenomena, for several thousands of years in art and architecture, for few thousand years in early examples of machines, and since about only 1950 in covalent and supramolecular biological and synthetic assemblies and macromolecules. They occur at all length scales, from mega to nano, and emerge in functions that are responsible for life and affect, sometimes in a dramatic and irreversible way by self-control and adaptation, our way of life. This chapter will first introduce the reader to complex systems and derived functions. It will subsequently present examples of complex helical self-organizations in art, architecture, early examples of machines, and natural phenomena. The discovery of helical self-organizations in biology provided the pioneers of the field of molecular biology and will be discussed next. This chapter will be concluded by work mostly from our laboratory on the development of helical self-organizations and functions in synthetic assemblies, covalent and supramolecular macromolecules, and hybrid systems based on them. Self-organization in bulk, organic solvents, and water will be discussed.
