Static and dynamic modeling

Abstract This chapter introduces the reader to static and dynamic modeling such as disease transmission models, with examples from both high- and low-income settings. Readers will become familiar with when to use each type of model, different types of static and dynamic models that are commonly used to model the impact of vaccination in populations, and to consider common examples of when each approach has been used previously by public health bodies such as the World Health Organization. The important of validation of models is also discussed, i.e. the comparison of model results with real-world data, and methods of conducting validation are discussed.
