An Endophytic Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales) Strain Enhances the Flavonol Contents of Helichrysum petiolare

Researchers are exploring the endophytic plant–fungi symbiotic relationship to improve the cultivation of targeted medicinal plant species. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of Beauveria bassiana on secondary metabolite contents and the antioxidant activity of Helichrysum petiolare . In a greenhouse experiment, H. petiolare seedlings were inoculated with a B. bassiana conidial suspension of 1 × 10 8 conidia m/L. The results showed that the flavonol contents were significantly higher in the fungus-treated plants (42.73 ± 2.56 mg QE/L) compared to the control plants (31.94 ± 1.69b mg QE/L). The phytochemical analysis further revealed that the fungus had no significant effects on the overall amount of volatile chemical constituents; however, a significant variation in the quantity (area ratio) of a detected individual compound, p-anisic acid methyl ester, was observed. Antioxidant assays revealed that the fungus did not significantly enhance the antioxidant capacity of H. petiolare . In conclusion, this study showed that B. bassiana inoculum improved the production of flavonol contents in H. petiolare plants.
