Abstract We have investigated the structural, elastic and electronic properties of A2TiCl6 (A = Li, Na and Rb) compounds by using the DFT calculations as implemented in Quantum espresso code. Their thermodynamic properties of these compounds have also been calculated by Gibbs2 program. Generalized gradient approximation in the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) form is used to estimate the above properties. The results reveal that the calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with available experimental values. The calculated band gaps are respectively 1.60, 1.67, and 1.93 eV for Li2TiCl6, Na2TiCl6 and Rb2TiCl6, indicating a semiconductor behavior. And their value increases with increasing ionic radius. On the other hand, the band gaps of these materials were also computed using the HSE06 hybrid functional and the values obtained are compared to those estimated with PBE method. The elastic constants, bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young’s modulus, Pugh’s and Poisson’s ratio are calculated. The elastic constants obtained of A2TiCl6 confirm the stability criteria, and the compounds are found to be stable. The obtained results of Pugh’s and Poisson’s ratios revealed that Li2TiCl6 and Na2TiCl6 are ductile compounds, whereas, Rb2TiCl6 is brittle material. The calculated heat capacity (Cv) at the Dulong–Petit limit is 224, 125 and 224 J mol–1 K–1 for Li2TiCl6, Na2TiCl6 and Rb2TiCl6, respectively.
