Peter Molnar (1943–2022) Peter Styles recalls a giant of geophysics who unravelled both mountain-building processes and their impact on Earth's climate Peter Molnar, Distinguished Professor of Geological Sciences at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and recipient of some of the most prestigious awards in geoscience, died on 23 June 2022, aged 78. He was an enormous influence on the geological aspects of plate tectonics once the original ideas of Dan McKenzie, Jason Morgan, Fred Vine and others had bedded down and become our way of looking at the Earth's major geological processes. In particular he provided enormous insight into those regions where major mountain building occurs – not the linear mountain chains such as the Andes which lie at Subducting Continental margins due to the consumption of a down-going slab, but the places where major continental plate meets major continental plate, such as the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau.
