Abstract As this chapter begins, “The songs that constitute The American Song Book have done what popular songs are not supposed to do: stayed popular.” The chapter discusses the various reasons for their endurance: singability, performability, and lyrics of “wit and verve.” These songs have endured and continue to be used in movies and commercials. Broadway frequently brings back the musicals of the golden age. Audiences continue to hear and know the music, especially when sung by more contemporary and well-known singers, not only Frank Sinatra but others such as Lady Gaga, Michael Bublé, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and Van Morrison.
