Perspectives on public involvement activities

This chapter discusses the nature and impact of the Public Involvement work carried out in the INDUCT project. This work was a new experience for all involved. It brought together a group of people with dementia (from the European Working Group of People with Dementia) and a group of early stage researchers (ESRs) from across Europe who were all interested in exploring the use of technology as a way to improve the lives of people with dementia. With the help of Alzheimer Europe (AE), which facilitated the overall process, and with the guidance of academic supervisors, the ESRs engaged with people with dementia, as well as their supporters and carers, gained insight into what it is like to have dementia, exchanged ideas and addressed methodological issues. This contributed towards improving the research process and the ESRs’ understanding of dementia, which was important for their research at the time and in the future. The three sections of this chapter present the respective perspectives of AE, two people with dementia and one of the students, who each describe their experience, some of the challenges and what they learnt from a slightly different angle.
