What Are We Doing and How Do We Do It?
Résumé fourni par la source
This chapter introduces two crucial aspects of religious education: the subject’s two broad aims, the academic and personal, and an explanation of the recent shift to a multidisciplinary approach. Beginning teachers will be brought into current conversations about the nature and purpose of the subject through this chapter. First, it is argued that a clear sense of aims allows the beginning teacher to articulate their own vision and identify the skills and knowledge they need to develop to achieve this vision. Moreover, a clear sense of aims allows beginning teachers to evaluate approaches, resources and activities in terms of how effectively they will achieve stated aims. As they develop skills and confidence, a formative sense of what beginning teachers are doing and why will be invaluable. Second, this chapter introduces educational thinking around the value of a multidisciplinary approach to religious education. This is a new development in the subject. Beginner teachers are provided with an overview of what a multidisciplinary approach can offer and how it can benefit pupils’ understanding.
